Man Ray and Lee Miller

I was in San Fransisco this weekend and I saw the Man Ray and Lee Miller exhibit at the Legion of Honor. It was quite provocative and totally accessible... Like I could have been there in Paris, in the 1930s, hanging out topless, smoking cigarettes, and and having my portrait made by Picasso (you know, when he would pop by). I do not care how cleque Paris is for lovers or artists... Lee Miller traveled from New York to Paris to study under Man Ray, they soon became lovers, then collaborators in exploring and developing new processes in photographic surrealisum. If this is not romantic and sultry and seeped in bergemont and vermoth I guess you'll need to go and see the exhibit for yourself...

Wholey heck! The internet is a spaghetti pot of nonsense!

So I am exhausted!... It is Sunday, early evening and I have spent the last hour (ok two) in a whirlwind of wondering aimlessly in a dizzy brain spin of halfhearted (severed) emotions... Yikes, this place in weird. It is So fucking WEIRD! I set out with a direction, I promise you I did... It was to find something interesting and perhaps even useful and if relayed correctly, it would ultimately INSPIRE you??? >>> What I have arrived at is overwhelm. I am completely depleted from admiring and judging and comparing and delving and longing and involving myself (emotionally) in affairs that are not mine to ponder... There was even a point at which the beauty and inspiration looked somehow ugly and diluted, it felt like inspiration torture... Just as people have become progressively desensitized by violence on TV, I feel as though I am being a little bit desensitized by beauty, design and cool shit on the internet. Meanwhile, the affairs that ARE mine, and the beauty that IS mine, I have neglected entirely... No, dinner is not on, laundry is not switched, clothes are not put away... My grubby little kid is not in a bath! And now I am sitting here writing this... My word I am a lump at the moment? Seriously, I fell in to a black hole and I feel yucky. Who cares about Tom Cruse being an alien mind reader (scientologist) or Nicole Richy when she was haggard (she wasn't always so stylish you know)? Who cares about some random, abandoned, craft blog that hasn't been written in it 7 years!? Who cares about beautiful pictures of rope or the trajectory of Kate Moss' career. I don't know these people, why am I investing??? I don't know it just happened! I could not guide you from point A to point Z (nor would you want to go). On the positive note I am pretty sure I did something completely unique tonight that can never be replicated, in it's exact contents at least, you know, the plethora of garbage I just filled my head with has most likely not ever been shoved into any human's brain in that precise order before.. By generic act however, this type of nonsense happens on gazillions of computers, everyday, around the world... Perhaps you are doing it now, sorry you had to land on this rant. Well I wanted to inspire you... I am pretty sure I can mark "F" in that box... But I am hoping I have said something you can at least relate to... I know for me this feeling is not new, in fact every time I hop on the internet at 9:pm and and not off till 1:am and I have spent another night without connecting to my husband who is, himself, wandering around in a totally different world on his own device, I feel this disappointment. Maybe I am just sensitive or maybe I should make a shift in my ratios... This all sounds way more ranty and dramatic than it is. And perhaps I've gotten it all out now? Really I just wanted to write... That, I HAVE done and what came out is more authentic than a picture of a waify model in bad 90's clothes with a face to counter act the hideous outfit and a hair do situation that looks fucking awesome on her but would be just plan old plan on you or I... But here's that picture any way... Because, of course I need a picture... (I don't have that picture yet... But watch! I will go find it... If I ever make it back to this post again, you will see that I am a fortune teller… Oh it is out there, and I'mona get it...
Ah-ha! Found one and it only took about 3 minutes! (that is a millisecond in internet time)

New bangs!

So I have got new bangs and I love them!... So much!!! they are all hi chopped up in the middle and curtain-y on the sides, they are funny little things that I love! I feel like these little bangs just open up my face and give my hair the sass that the misery of a grow out is usually lacking. So, they are a little art school (I am a painter after all) and they do resemble my kindergarten picture when I cut my bangs myself, super special, just for picture day, but I LOVE THEM!!!! It is amazing how a little change can make my face feel alive again... I was suffering from a serious case of dead face... I know that doesn't sound very attractive, and it is not, not attractive at all, but I calls it like I sees it folks... But now I am, if I don't say so myself, feeling rather cute with my crooked little bang job. I have a lightness around the fringe and a hop in ma' step! I am ready to take on the sunshine!

Golden Rule

This is a beautiful image from a shoot I did hair and makeup for, for Golden Rule... One of Portland's most original stores EVER and the largset personal collection of rare vintage I have ever seen... Sadly, it now, exists solely on the internet.

Why I love to cut curly hair

Here is what I can do for your curls... Or rather here is what I LOVE to do for your curls. I love to take a massive block of curly hair and set it free... It is like it starts out as a heavy hunk of wood and I sculpt it into a beautiful work of art. I love to take each tress and make it it's own shining superstar. Bouncing forth radiating light loveliness around your beautiful face... In a happy head celebration bouncing, cheering and marching it's freedom dance. Too much? Did I lay it on too thick? Am I'm SPIRALING out of control here with my elaboration? Because, honestly, I don't think I have quite yet conveyed my fondness for your coils! No seriously, I have been called the curl whisperer... Just saying someone (other than me) did say that. It is probably because I love them so much, so I just know how to talk to these babies! Is it like I am a used car sales man with this schpeal? sorry about that, but my enthusiasum is real and my abilities... Also... Real. I just have to say one last time, I love um' I love those crazy curls!!!

DREAM client, meet hair LOVE!!!

Calling all dream clients... Which I do currently have MANY of, but as I build my client base I want to fill my entire books with JUST you lovely ladies... There I said it, my dream clients are LADIES, and yes, they are lovely. Who are you exactly? My dreamies??? Well... YOU are fun!!! (<<-- as exampled by the exclamation marks) YOU may be a little funky... But you also like to express your natural beauty. YOU are creative in your style and are current with the trends... But you don't just hop on any old fad... It has to make sense to you, and you dig it because YOU dig it! YOU are easy... It is not that I am lazy and I want to sleep on the job, but it's that I enjoy a light heart, and someone who is into trying new things, to me, that is easy. YOU are interesting... I love hearing about the lives of my clients! If you are shy, that's ok too, as long as you are nice. When it comes to your hair you are willing to do a little bit of work to make it look awesome but you are free enough to let the cut work for you, all on it's own, from time to time. When it comes to color, you are looking for someone to copy cat nature, like you wintered over Down Under and came out looking like a 6 year old (golden and sunkissed). YOU are regular (we are not talking bran muffin regular), you come in often enough so that I don't have to scream at you, intervention style, for the wreckage we have to deal with during your yearly visit (really though, I just hate to miss my favorite peeps--a year is a long, long time). YOU will do the outside work, meaning if you sizzle-fry the bejeezus out of your tresses on the daily... Please use a heat protectant... I know this sounds like I am your gym teacher telling you to practice safe sex, but seriously... You will thank me for it later. I get giddy when I see you on the books because you are super awesome and I love to play with your hair. So there it is, you are my dream... And if you posses even three of these traits, well, I think we will get along great! Now a little about me... ME: I am fun too!!! I am skilled, experienced and passionate about hair styling. I love my job and I truly value my clients. I love nature and art and to me hair is a mixture of these things. I am creative and sculptural, and use your natural assets as my inspiration. I see hairstyling as a three dimensional art form, and each head of hair as my unique art piece. I am a pretty good listener, and am all about the consultation. I offer a complimentary bang trim between appointments... So you don't murder your fringe in the meantime. I appreciate your support and your confidence in my styling abilities
. I look forward to meeting you!

More Agyness Deyn

This Weeks Crush: Agness Deyn

Is there a them here? If so it may be tomboys, or androgeny or boy hair on girls. My last few post have had some reoccurring characters... I get on kicks is all, you may notice that. Well it is time for another girl crush, this week it is Agyness Deyn... It seams like all my girl crushes are kinda have a tom-boy appeal... That is probably because in rael life I do like the fellas, but also because it take really beautiful women to look so stunning when you take away all the frill. I think it is the simplicity and bare bonsiness that usually make things striking.

Bowl Haircuts

More on the bowl cut... In it's different incarnations. Not all exactly Dorothy Hamill, but still the essence or potential is there. Here are some lovely images of some sweet short haircuts for you to ponder.
Might be a bit heavy on the Aggy Deyn Side, but we are talking bowlcuts right... And who could get too much of her? just darling...

80's and 90's hair inspiration

As we see the decades whirling back around... And around... And around. This time that spinning bottle has landed pointing in the direction of the 1990's with bits carried over, of course, from the 80's... Today the focus is on the tom-boyishly, brilliant (if you can pull it off) bowl cut... Here are some of the first to make this thing look amazing, effortless and crushingly hot. I don't know about you but I always had an aching crush on Mary Stuart Masterson for her roll in Some Kind of Wonderful, as Watts, the tom-boy drummer. It was mostly an I-just-want-to-be-her crush, with bits of real crush thrown in, I mean she did look just like... (eehumm) Justin Bieber... And I WAS like 7 when that movie came out (though I didn't see it until I was more like 11) So you do the math. And now we are moving right along to the 90's with this sleek thang, looking incredible on Josie Bissett (Jane) from Melrose Place. If I could you know I would but I am just a bit too girly to pull off a cut like this
But on these ladies? Crushing. Am I Right?

For my curlies... YOU will love this!

This is so funny I was LOL-ing, for real, when I was this. I am sure if you have curly hair and have fought the frizzies and fly aways you will be able to relate. Even for those not so curly haired this video is super funny, I think you will like.

This Weeks Crush: Carrie Mulligan

How cute it her sweet little face??? Also I think she is definitely one of those women who was made for short hair! She is just too much for me!

20's Hair Inspiration

Here are a few lovely images of 1920's inspired hair do's... I love the romance vibe they had way back there in the roarin' twenties!

Little Kid Hair!

One of my favorite things to do is to give people "little kid hair" because little kids have the most amazing hair, and everyone remembers how their hair used to be when they were wee ones and much of the time people still consider that, long ago hair, to be their natural color. All sun kissed and blonde like golden tinsel... So I like to take people back there to have that amazing hair once again... It is just a little bit of magic that I know, oh and a little bit of science.

Balayage haircoloring!

I love this look! Don't you? Here's how we got it. The technique is called Balayage, and how you do it is you basically just paint the hair, it is foil free highlighting process. So naturally being a painter as well as a hairstylist I LOVE this application. It is so dimensional and subtle at the same time. Just look how gorgeous our Miss Francesca looks when we are all done!
